Machine Sewing 101 for Teens and Adults: Now is the time to learn a rewarding new skill!
Do you want to learn to sew but don’t know where to start? Are you frustrated by online videos that make it look so easy? Are you intimidated or disappointed by group classes that can make it hard for you to ask all the questions as they occur to you?
I offer a step-by-step curriculum starting from the very beginning through more advanced projects that allows you to pick what interests you as you go – clothing? home decor? toys? ridiculously awesome Halloween costumes? I’ve got you covered!
Who is it for?
These classes are for anyone age 13 and up. No prior experience necessary.
What will you learn?
- How to thread and operate a sewing machine
- How to choose your own fabrics and notions for projects
- How to use basic sewing tools to accurately mark, cut, pin, and press fabric
- How to read and follow instructions in a sewing tutorial
- How to have FUN making things, even when you run into challenges
Not sure where to start? These are some ideas that can be created in a single 2 hour sewing session:
- Decorative throw pillow
- Drawstring bag for your sunglasses, phone, etc
- Infinity scarf
- Learn to hem your pants
After your first class, these are some ideas that can be created in more than one sewing session:
- Pajama Pants
- Zipper pouch
- Padded computer or tablet case
- Reusable shopping tote bag
- Sewing with knits: Leggings, yoga pants, or a basic T-shirt

Private sewing lessons are held in my studio in the heart of San Bruno, CA and are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday through Saturday between 10am and 8pm, by appointment only. A lesson is $50 per hour, for 2 hours. I am flexible if you later want longer or shorter sessions, but the initial lesson is a minimum of 2 hours.
